Justin Raisen is a songwriter, record producer, recording engineer, mix engineer, lyricist, and multi-instrumentalist inspired to revolutionize pop music. His credits include Michael Stipe, Sunflower Bean, River Phoenix, Angel Olsen, Sky Ferreira, Kim Gordon, Kylie Minogue Santigold, Charli XCX, Lawrence Rothman, Ariel Pink, Marissa Nadler, and Yves Tumor. In 2019, the L.A producer launched his own record label, Kro Records, releasing never before released tracks from River Phoenix’s Aleka’s Attic along with a single from Rain Phoenix featuring Michael Stipe. A week later the label dropped a double A-side single by Marissa Nadler featuring John Cale of the Velvet Underground.
This year, Justin partnered with Charli XCX on her newly formed all-female rock band, Nasty Cherry. He produced, wrote, and engineered for their debut single, “Win,” which has gained much praise only a few days after its release. In 2016, Justin co-wrote and produced Kim Gordon’s first single, “Murdered Out” as well as produced Angel Olsen’s album, critically acclaimed My Woman. Following the success of Charli XCX’s True Romance, Raisen was credited as producer and writer on her second studio album, Sucker, which was voted #1 “Best Pop Album of 2015.”In addition, his work on Sky Ferreira’s Night Time My Time, was named best music on Pitchfork.com as well as top 21 albums of the year in Rolling Stone 2013.
According to Pitchfork’s article, “WTF is Pop,” Raisen’s “west coast free-spiritedness and a no bullshit New York edge” is what makes his eccentric personality so magnetic. He draws lyrical inspiration from songs that are off putting yet straight forward like artists such as David Bowie, Kurt Cobain, and Velvet Underground. When asked about being a labeled pop producer and if it bothers him, Raisen responded, “No, I just get a kick out of it. WTF is pop, man? I have no clue. Pop is not even pop anymore. I like to bring a bent shape. I guess I’m a rebel…”
