Kuya is a multi-platinum, Grammy-nominated pop and r&b production duo from Toronto, consisting of brothers Samuel and Robert Gerongco. The company’s origin is rather unique, considering Sammy got his start in entertainment as an actor and performer in the Broadway production of “Miss Saigon”. When the show’s run ended in 2001, he launched Kuya, a music production company, with his brother Bobby who studied music production at Harris Institute. The pair were also in a band of the same name, Kuya, that caught the attention of prominent producers Pharrell Williams, Timbaland, Wyclef Jean and Babyface but ultimately disbanded facing the reality of a music industry that didn't know how to market an asian group. Samuel and Robert decided to focus full time on songwriting and production.
The move paid off in a big way, as Kuya received credit in 2004 for working on Nelly’s number one, Grammy-nominated, 3x Platinum album Suit and Mase’s certified gold album Welcome Back. Gaining legitimacy, the duo piled up hit after hit over the years, working on records for artists such as Jesse McCartney, Big Time Rush, Ginuwine, Kandi Burruss, and Girlicious. After racking up a hefty pile of successful work, the team also began focusing on developing artists under their label.
In 2009, their artist JRDN released his debut album IAMJRDN, which garnered two JUNO nominations (Canadian Grammy awards) and two gold singles. Later on, in 2014, JRDN received a JUNO awards for R&B Recording of the year, highlighting the genius of the Gerongco brothers.
Kuya's most recent success may be one of their most noteworthy to date. The duo worked both as songwriters and producers on Alessia Cara’s debut album Know-It-All, including the smash hit “Here”, which yielded 3x Platinum status in the United States and Platinum standing in Canada and New Zealand. With lasting success and reliability, Samuel and Robert Gerongco continue to grow Kuya into an incredibly impressive organization that has the ability to remain on top for years to come.
