Earlier this week, the ACM nominations were revealed by Lady Antebellum on CBS This Morning! Along with four other nominations, Keith Urban was nominated for album of the year for Ripcord. One of the featured singles from the record, “Wasted Time”, was co-written and produced by AAM’s Grammy nominated producer, songwriter, mixer, and musician Greg Wells! The track was released in April 2016 and peaked to #1 on the Billboard Country Airplay Charts and #4 on the Billboard US Hot Country Songs Chart following a stellar performance of the song at the 51st ACM Awards last year which received a standing ovation from the audience.
Though Wells is known for work with various hit pop songs, such as “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield and the Twenty One Pilots album Vessel, working with Urban and other songwriter James Abrahart created a renowned powerhouse team. One of the first times the song was performed, Urban honored the two co-songwriters as backup musicians of the songs, allowing them to even sing the first verse, as well. The unlikely collaboration team recalls their writing session as one of the best, most fun they’ve had:
“‘I don’t know if you’re gonna like this, but I’m hearing this tune,’ Wells recalls saying during the session as he sat down at the piano. After a few notes, Urban grabbed a guitar ‘and we jammed on it for a while. And then very quickly the melody came flying out of him. Just like that. … It was nuts, actually.’”
Wells explains his experience with country music to be both incredible and special, yet it “wrecks working with any other artist”. With the great, successful experience Wells had with this collab, it’s no wonder the single did so well and that the album is nominated for an ACM award! We hope that Wells continues work with Urban for more successful, fun experiences in the future!
